About the Sport of Team Handball

Imagine taking the fast pace of basketball and the team play of soccer, put it on a court measuring 20 meters by 40 meters, add two goals about half the size of soccer goals, and a goal zone like the three-point circle that is off-limits to all but the goalie and you can imagine team handball.

One goalie and six court players pass, dribble and shoot with a leather ball the size of a youth soccer ball. Youth games are two 15 minute periods, running time, free substitutions. Scores may reach into the 20's. Audiences are surprised by the amount of contact allowed before penalty and enjoy the fastbreaks and leaping scoring styles.

Building A New Sport

Building a new sport is challenging in the US. Basketball, baseball, football and others need support and are the focus of many parents and sponsors. Team Handball offers a chance to stand out as a supporter. This is a new, emerging and dynamic sport with which corporations can use to differentiate themselves.

Although the sport is the second most popular sport in the world, competition here in the United States is just beginning to build. The Atlanta metro area is one where youth are competing; events such as the Georgia Games, the Cumberland Cup and the Atlanta Team Handball League.

Atlanta Team Handball

The purpose of Atlanta Team Handball is to provide new opportunities to grow the sport of team handball for boys and girls in Georgia, particularly in the metro-Atlanta area -- drawing on the success of the Cobb County Schools intramural program (cosponsored by USA Team Handball and Cumberland Mall), the elite youth teams that competed in the 1996 and 1997 Partille Cup (Sweden) and by utilizing the talents of US Mens's and Women's National Team players.
